Need a strategic leadership plan this summer?

We’ve got a solution!

Have you ever seen a group of high school students standing up in front of a jam-packed audience of adults, presenting a well-researched, brilliant solution for a local business?

A few years back, our lead mentor happened to end up in exactly this situation.

Always fascinated with the way teens gain true leadership skills, she’d signed up to be an audience participant at the teens’ pitch night—and she was blown away.

They were tossing around sophisticated business concepts like market research, KPIs, and strategic planning.

Immediately, she turned to the person next to her. ”Where did they learn all this?” she asked.

And that’s when she learned about Teamship, an intensive week-long experience for high school students who come together to solve complex problems for real-world businesses. How? By teaching them what leadership truly looks like in action (not just earning a position as head of a club).

Aware of how important it is to equip our students with these sophisticated skills that they can use in this rapidly changing job market. She leaped into becoming a certified coach herself.

In the process, she came to master the 12 key tools of Teamship.

Today, we want to outline 3 of the most essential leadership tools that students learn during their Teamship experience.

The Questioning Tool

As adults, many of us come to understand that asking great questions is an art—not something we come out of high school (or even college!) knowing how to do. So, the first most important skill students learn is how to follow their curiosity and dig deep with probing questions. This is exactly what results in powerful market research: fully understanding another’s perspective.

The Coding Tool

A big part of solving any problem is understanding the problem. So often when students have completed their research, they can feel overwhelmed. What do they DO with all of this information? That’s where the coding tool comes in: it teaches students how to determine the key takeaways. Then, from there, they can use their new insights to begin brainstorming a feasible solution for the business challenge.

The Decision Matrix Tool

This is the most exciting part of the student's experience: deciding where and how they can make the most impact. With this tool, they come to understand how to narrow in on the most effective solutions. They learn to ask themselves, “How big an impact is this solution going to make? Is this idea truly viable?” Students then map all of this information onto a matrix where it is far easier to choose the most impactful solutions.

We’re thrilled to share with you that we have created an amazing weeklong summer Teamship experience designed to help your student gain these all-important leadership skills.

Introducing The Teamship Summer Experience

The Teamship Experience is a week-long virtual experience this summer where our students get to solve real problems for real businesses.

In the process, they’ll get to work alongside other DSP students, work with an incredible coach, and walk away with tools they will use for the rest of their lives.

How does Teamship work?

Students will first be matched with a business partner (a real organization based in the Raleigh-Durham area) who will present a specific challenge. After that, the students’ coach will guide them in gaining a deep understanding of the problem, developing a solution, and presenting a prototype back to the business.

In other words: this isn’t a week-long lecture—it’s an experience.

Who is it for?

This powerful week-long experience is for students who aspire to stand out as innovative  leaders, whether that’s on their sports teams, in their academic clubs, their everyday lives, or their future careers.

Previous students have said that this experience . . .

  • transformed their current skill set to solve complex problems

  • taught them skills that they use every single day

  • helped them stand out as young professionals

  • jump-started their career

What are the dates?

This year’s virtual program is currently scheduled for June 26-30 from 9am-4pm Pacific Time/ 12pm-7pm Eastern Time. All sessions will be held on Zoom. (And don’t worry! Your student won’t just be sitting there listening to lectures all day long. It will be highly interactive and a whole lot of fun!)
